Mark Vruno

Mark Vruno brings more than 20 years of print industry experience to GAM, to which he contributed as a free-lance writer before joining the staff on a full-time basis in late 2004. In that time, Vruno has worked closely with editor-in-chief Bill Esler to focus the magazine’s content on technology applications. He writes the popular “How’d They Print That?” column and coordinates feature coverage and editorial production.

Throughout his versatile career, Vruno has worked directly for printing companies, as well as on behalf of printers (including Banta) and suppliers (such as Fujifilm) in marketing/public relations capacities. His tenure includes nine years with RR Donnelley on the corporate side and five years of selling for a $25-million sheetfed printer. Having been on all sides of the proverbial fence—corporate communications, PR and sales—he lends a comprehensive perspective to his reporting.

Texas Trade Print for 4over

January 26, 2009 | Link This | Email this | Comments (2)

On Friday, I was one of more than 100 people "braving" 75-degree temperatures (above zero!) to attend the grand opening ceremonies of 4over, Inc.'s 50,000-sq.ft. plant in Arlington, TX, near Dallas—the $80-million trade printer's sixth manufacturing site. Some 25 employees have been hired there, with about 25 more to go. Its two new Komori Lithrone presses are up and running approximately 1,500 jobs daily already.

During a lunch of zesty Texas barbecue, I sat at a table with a handful of local small printers and brokers—all 4over customers. They told me how their businesses have been booming (especially direct mail advertisin...Read More

Graph Expo: 6 Days and Counting ...

October 21, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

As the Graph Expo countdown continues, there is less than a week left until the print industry's big North American tradeshow gets under way in Chicago. In the past month, the editorial staff printing trade show mailing offset printing digital printing printing workflowof Graphic Arts Monthly and Graphic Arts Online has been inundated with e-mail and phone calls inviting us to attend the myriad press conferences, luncheon meetings, booth tours and one-on-one interviews with exhibiting firms.

We have received U.S. mail, too, related to Graph Expo events. One of the mo...Read More

Transpromo VDP Gone Bad

August 13, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (0)

We all receive them in our mail at home—those letters and offers that simply don't apply to us or our interests. You know, like the golf catalog sent to the avid tennis player who hasn't hit the links in over 15 years. Or, the insurance pitch to the "newlywed" who has been married for at least that long.

There goes the groom ...

Got one a few weeks ago: An official-looking form letter from Matt Mundy, a partner at New York Life's branch in Illinois, who congratulated me on being recently married. "Getting married is a blessed, joyous event," it began. I agree, Matt, but I haven't exchanged any wedding vows lately.

Now I don't know Mr. Mundy personally, but a quick Google search revealed that he has children about the same age as my...Read More

My First Drupa

June 1, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (1)

Although I've been in around the U.S. printing industry for more than two decades, like most North Americans I never had the occassion to actually go to the drupa trade show—until now. I've heard about it and I've read about it, but seeing truly is believing in this case. The sheer scale of the event is like no show we have in America: We're talking some 2,000 vendors and 40 acres to cover!

Sore Feet Already

There's LOTS of walking at drupa. It's only my fourth day in Dusseldorf, and my feet started aching yesterday despite wearing a pair of my most broken-in dress shoes. Today is Sunday, so the pace is a bit slower—but not much. (Look, I found time to write a quick blog entry!) Blisters aside, the experience has been well worth the pain so far. The environment here is so charged and exhilarating that it's difficul...Read More

May 20, 2008 | Link This | Email this | Comments (1)

Sustainability and automated productivity are on the docket as nearly 7,000 printers and mailers gather for the National Postal Forum (NPF), ending tomorrow at the Anaheim Convention Center in California. Postmaster General John Potter addressed the topic of the U.S. Postal Service’s Intelligent Mail Barcode (IMB) and its new Flats Sequencing System (FSS) in a keynote address on May 19. “Despite the challenging economy, one thing that hasn’t changed is America’s confidence in the mail,” Potter said.
