  • Twitter is the dumbest thing ever!

    July 12, 2009

The Twitter thing continues to amaze me. More than the technology itself; more than the fact that 20,000 people a week are signing up; more than the fact that my 84 year old mother asked me if she needs to enroll in order to keep up; more than the fact that Ashton Kuchter and I have a combined total of 2,000,000 followers (not making that up!); what amazes me is that printers are—for the most part—completely ignorant of this amazing phenomenon. They don’t know. They don’t care. Amazing.

I must admit, that it was only recently that I started researching it and even caring about Twitter. I had signed up at the urging of one of my kids. I followed Kathy Muller (ICED sales trainer) and Dr. Joe Webb (Dr. Doom) and then let it go for a while. I’m not sure why, but I started Googling what it is all about and suddenly it had my attention. Now I am pushing hard to bring my numbers up and provide quality Tweets so that people feel that they are getting their money’s worth (jk. It’s a free service).

So, what’s the value of emitting 140 character Tweets? Well, that part is up to your imagination. You could provide special offers to select customers or educate them on variable data printing or make special (and free) announcements. Here, I’ve compiled a few articles on the subject of how businesses are using Twitter. Pretty interesting stuff if you have any creativity at all.

I am using my Twitter account to provide special information for those who reach out to me. I consider them my best customers and wish to treat them as such. In addition, I am hoping that these people buy something from me. Duh.

So, my advice is to spend a lunchtime reading the articles and then corner a 20-something or teenager and have him/her use little words to ’splain it to you. Maybe someday you will have 2,000,000 followers like me and Ash!

Oh, and Ashton, I am tired of dragging your sorry a** to the 2,000,000 mark. The next two are up to you.

Title is correct, but post is off-base. Recession or not, if your clients or prospective clients diddle all day on Twitter, it's time to find clients with real work at hand. And Bill, you might want to bump up the age of your expert user by at least 10 years. Or so says a 15-year-old intern at Morgan Stanley, quoted in the UK's Guardian.
