  • Roll to Sheet – Sheetfed Presses

    February 2, 2010

Question: I’ve been reading many articles on roll to sheet presses - what is the advantage?

Answer: The big advantage is being able to purchase stock in roll rather than sheet form. This can be quite a savings. Likewise, if you already have a web this is a good way to use up miscellaneous rolls that may have already been charged to a job. Many printers find this a real advantage. The only downside items are - you will need a web cleaner on the press and you may have small fit issues on high quality jobs. Keep in mind the grain of the stock is now around the cylinder.

Good way to reduce paper purchase cost. Another advantage is that the paper goes right into the press and there is little dimensional change as opposed to skids that sit around and grow, shink and get wavy.
Although, you can only control one dimension (cutoff). Roll widths required can be a challenge and can limit savings since it is not practical to stock every roll size needed. There will be inherent waste as compromises are made and trim waste is generated. Makereadies can also be a challenge, it's not the same as moving in a fresh skid of paper that is the correct size for the job.
