Machine Washable iPods
November 19, 2008
iPods are tougher than you might think. I learned that after my 17 year old left his iPod in his pants pocket in the laundry - and it continued working. But you may be surprised to learn that getting an iPod or cell phone wet or submerged is not as unusual as you might think. If you do some Google searches you will find quite a bit of information written about washing iPods in the laundry or dropping cell phones in the toilet (YUCK!).
Some people talk about using hair dryers or ovens to help dry their iPod or cell phone. And some say to put it in a bag of rice because the rice will absorb the moisture. From my experience the best strategy is to just turn it off and let it sit. If the battery is removable it is a good idea to remove that too. The amount of time you let it dry should be determined by the degree of submersion. For your average coffee spill maybe a few minutes to a few hours; after a laundry accident a day or more.
Now I am not suggesting washing your iPod - that is crazy. It’s an electrical gadget and they don’t respond well to liquids or to heat. As they say on MythBusters, “Don’t try this at home, ever!”
Speaking of pop culture TV terms that become part of our vocabulary, in the TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond” Ray’s wife played by Patricia Heaton often called him an idiot after he did something stupid. Now I would never use that term to talk to my son, but the thought did go through my mind after the second machine washing. This time the iPod was not as forgiving. After the second incident the songs started to “snap, crackle and pop” like a bowl of Rice Krispies. Of course this was just the excuse I needed to go out and buy the new iPod and give him my old one. More on that later…
