It’s Not Easy Being Green - 4
December 2, 2007

As discussed in the last few Blogs, there are several aspects of the "Greening efforts" that are controversial. For example, some people say corn based US fuels are a good thing while others say it takes more energy to create them. Some companies say they are "carbon neutral" because they pay to plant trees while others say they need to reduce there energy consumption and use alternative, natural fuel sources such as wind or solar power.

I had a chance to talk with Roy Grossman and Jon Fogel from Sandy Alexander earlier this week. Sandy Alexander is one of the leading companies in this area and they have created one of the first Environmental Responsibility Reports. In this they discuss how they measure and have changed the way they make printed products.

Grossman and Fogel feel that too many companies are trying to take advantage of the movement and are marketing themselves as eco-friendly, when there efforts are minimal. The suggest that the industry needs to create a create and adopt a standard language and/or standardized measurements to discuss these topics.

The goal of the language and measurement would be to outline a way for everyone to measure and report their performance, which would help consumers and not confuse them. If you are a aware of a these controversies, have taken a position, and are willing to talk about this please drop me an email.

The printing industry trade associations are responding to the demand by their members to provide clarity to the sustainable green printing issue. PIA/GATF, SGIA, and FTA have formed the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership, which will provide a national registry for printers that want to be recognized for their efforts in this area. There will be clear criteria along with verification so that print buyers will have assurance that those who are registered are meeting the criteria. For more information, see SGPPartnership.org
