It’s Not Easy Being Green - 2

The momentum to be more eco-friendly has been building up slowly, but building up strong. It reminds me of one of the metaphors from Collins book “Good to Great”, which talks about the momentum created by a large flywheel, it takes a lot of energy to start, but once started requires less power to sustain.
This momentum has come from magazine articles, manufacturers and trade shows. You my recall in the August issue of GAM a article entitled “
Great Print Sustained”
In the article author Don Carli, talks about a new business motivator called “sustainability” which he claims will change the nature of demand for printing services, printing equipment and supplies. The momentum was also clear at Graph Expo. Any manufacturer with a “green” product talked about environmental sustainability, climate change and “green print”.
And at a lunch presentation at the show Carli stressed the importance of energy consumption in paper manufacturing (fourth highest of all industries) and printing-related manufacturing and logistics (15th highest of all industries).
In an article in the Seybold Report (10/4/07) John Parsons reported “After this session, the sense on the show floor was reminiscent of the buzz following the introduction of JDF. Some vendors, notably Kodak, were educating their potential customers. However, as with JDF, practical sustainability solutions lagged well behind the talk.”
