On-Demand Challenges
March 17, 2008

OK this is going to sound a little like "show overdose whining". But there is some content, post whining, about Quark. I was a bit weary after 2 back to back, round trips from Denver to Boston first for the Digital Services Peer Group and then for the On-Demand show

When I arrived at the On-Demand show I assumed in would be in the Heinz Auditorium and it was not. This assumption came from previous experience based on hotel selection. Looking at the hotel map there were the traditional hotels used for conventions around the Heinz. But went I walked over the breezeway from the Copley hotels I was shocked to find no show!

I quickly went back to the Marriott to see a sign offering bus service. The buses ran great during the day and I only missed the first 30 minutes of the annual “What’s new at the on demand show” presentation.

Quark

There were rumors running rampant that Quark would discontinue their desktop version so I decided to visit their night time presentation to hear it from the horses mouth. Quark announced that they were not discontinuing the desktop version. They said they were leveraging the existing desktop publishing, server, and collaborative workflow expertise to launch a new enterprise solution in the emerging dynamic publishing market.

Called Quark Dynamic Publishing Solution (DPS), the enterprise-scale publishing solution combines flexible layout with automated publishing to create and deliver accurate, relevant, and attractive communications across multiple types of media, including print, the Web, and mobile and electronic devices.

Ironically the new president promised “we will NOT PowerPoint you to death” and then 3 presentations proceeded to PowerPoint us to death.

I hit the PowerPoint death wall around the 70 minute mark I decided to call it quits and walked out during the 3rd presentation. As I hiked the mile to the front of the building I was humming the song “killing me softly”.

Howie: You better get to Boston more often. I can't remember that last time I went to the Heinz Auditorium for an exhibition there! Luckily, you found your way.
