Dave, Barb & New On Demand stuff
March 12, 2008
Last week was the On-Demand show in Boston which was co-located with the AIIM show. Its always interesting how they do this its like walking on a red state (On-Demand) - blue state (AIM) map.
For the first time there was a very entertaining keynote from David Pogue, best-selling author and New York Times personal technology columnist. Although he is well know to people in our generation for his NY Times technology reviews, he is also known by the younger folks for his NY Times blogs many of which become “best sellers” on U-Tube.
A little know fact is that David spent 10 years on Broadway arranging, conducting, and playing synthesizers in theater pits and now creates hilarious “Weird Al Yankovic” type songs about technology issues. He did two of these in his presentation and brought the house down.
Barb on Web to Print
The Infotrends breakfast was perhaps the best presentation at the show. Barb Pellow’s presentations was spot on. Barb asked the audience to stop calling web based services “web to print” and requested we call it “multichannel e-procurement”.
We have talked about this subject too. And while I agree that web to print is not the right term, I just can’t use “multichannel” or “e-procurement” to discuss anything. Sorry, but I am not sure there is anything wrong with simply saying "web based services".
New announcements
- Konica Minolta showed a technology demonstration of a 125 ppm, 11x17 black and white, toner device the can print two sides at the same time for a 250 ipm device. Although not currently available the bizhub PRO 2500P will most likely come to market less expensive then the competition.
- PitStop Server 4.5 provides end-users with a more intuitive, reworked user interface. It allows easy access to hot folder setups, files in process, and a comprehensive history log.
- EFI extended support for its Digital StoreFront Web-to-print solution to include native integration with its PrintSmith Print MIS system
- Canon announced two new members of the imagePRESS family, the imagePRESS C6000VP and the imagePRESS C6000. The imagePRESSC6000VP is a 60-ppm production color printer that will join the imagePRESS C7000VP and the imagePRESS C1 in the product line.
