Practicing Safe Traveling with a Laptop
September 5, 2008
In a recent blog I came out of the laptop closet and admitted buying the latest MacBook Pro. Of course as someone who has had laptops fail there are several things I think you need to do before you start your road warrior travels.
First I keep a power supply in my travel bag which I never remove and another at home always plugged in. Second you must always be prepared with an emergency start up disk or Diagnostic Startup Disk, just in case your laptop is having a bad day. I have owned a lot of laptops and I travel well equipped for the occasional problem, with back ups of start up disks and hard disk tools such as disk warrior and Tech Tools Pro.
But I was surprised to find that the original disks that came with the computer would not “boot up” my computer even with the C, D or option keys held down. So I visited my friends at the Apple Genius Bar. What a cool job title I am experiencing job title envy.
They told me that some of the original install disks did not start up the MacBook Pros and to call Apple and they would send some new ones. Of course, the geniuses were right (kinda the reason they are geniuses I guess). I called Apple care and got a replacement start up disk. But I think there is a better option – which is putting a full blown Mac OSX on a flash drive. More on that next time.
