How many Web to Print Users?
January 21, 2008
In a previous bog I discussed one of the emerging controversies about web to print: Is it good business? Another interesting controversies is how many companies are actually using it. The Industry Measure finds that the adoption rate is 24% and has remained unchanged for 18 months. In the NAPL Digital Services Study Published last year we had 42% of the respondents say that were using web to print. And personally I see less then 1 out of 10 printers offering a web to print solutions.
What is going on? Here’s what I think! Many printers say they have a web to print solutions when really they don’t. They accept customers files attached to a email, files sent to a FTP site or email pdf proofs and that’s what they call a web to print solution. But its not.
This only becomes obvious if you walk into there shop and see what they are doing or if you use follow up with phone interviews or ask more in-depth questions about specific features. This is a trend our research department sees more and more each survey. As the issues get more complicated there is a greater and greater need for more in depth research techniques. So I am not sure if anyone knows how many companies are using a web to print solutions.
