Rites of Passage and Work
May 15, 2008

Do we ever complete our rites of passage or do they simply evolve as we grow. Yesterday was a big day for my 16 year old son. He got his drivers license and we went out and bought a car. I remember this as one of the best days of my life, it signaled freedom and independence from my parents and a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood.

When he thanked me I reminded him that he had been working toward this day for 6 years. In those 6 years he did chores around the house like mowing the lawn or shoveling the snow. He got paid for those chores and the money was put into a saving account for this car. My question is do we ever stop going through these rites of passage and do they extend into our working life.

Clearly weddings, divorces, births and deaths never stop but what about in our business lives. Are rites of passage limited to our personal lives or are they also part of our business lives? Are they strictly about weddings, divorces, births and deaths or are they also about promotions, new job responsibilities and/or job changes?
