Tough In Detroit, Hopeful in East LansingNovember 21, 2008 This week I am in East Lansing, Michigan. A few interesting things are happening up here. First it would be hard not to notice the concerns about the auto industry as the big three ask the government for a bail out. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, no one can deny the pivotal role that the auto industry plays in the Detroit Metro and Michigan economy. The auto industry is one of the deep vertical markets that drives much of the economy as well as the graphic arts business. That includes everything from design to print production. Last year I had the opportunity to meet with a Detroit design agency and learned of their work using variable data printing to promote car sales. As you may know, automobile sales and local car dealership repair services are two successful vertical markets for variable data ad campaigns. Second, you can’t go anywhere without hearing the excitement about the MSU – Penn State game this weekend. It is the first time in 18 years that MSU is playing for Big 10 championship bowl bid. I don’t usually pay much attention to college ball, but when your boss is a former Nittany Lion – it is impossible not to hear about it. And third, it is really cold. I was surprised when I left my house in Denver where it was 70 degrees to get into the rental car in Detroit where the temperature was in the 20s and wind was gusting to 20 mph. Some of the people I am working with took some time off to go hunting. With the weather this cold it is hard to believe that anyone could stay outside for long periods of time in this bitter cold. Considering the state of the local economy and temperature, it is a chilling time for the folks here. It may not please my boss but I would like to wish good luck to all of the bowl hopeful teams. Hopefully both the temperature and economy will warm up for everyone. Readers, to contact Howie directly e-mail your comments here. Posted by Howie Fenton on November 21, 2008 | Comments (0)
