Green Step 5 Measure, publish and market
February 20, 2008
Green action items #5. Measure, publish and market your actions but avoid greenwashing
As clear from the carbon offsetting discussions the definitions of what meets the industries definition of sustainability is changing. This is an ongoing discussion that requires both active reporting and active debate. Therefore companies are encouraged to publish their efforts, and educate customers on the beneifts of a "greener" product.
There is also a marketing advantage to becoming a green printer. This is clear on the AIGA web site. The AIGA, a national organization for designers has taken a leadership role and created the Center For Sustainable Design.
On their web site AIGA encourges its members to utilize companies that promote "greener" manufacturing by saying, “Through case studies, interviews, resources and discourse, this site will encourage and support designers as they incorporate sustainable thinking into their professional lives”. And last but not least there is nothing wrong with promoting your green efforts as long as you don’t fall into the trap of the Six Sins of Greenwashing.
