A Backward Biography
By way of late introduction, I’m in now my third career: College Professor. I teach in the Graphic Communication Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, California. We have a four-year degree program with several concentrations: Management, Design, Packaging, Digital Imaging. Our students are known for their hands-on experience. They learn how to prepare and produce printed and electronic documents on digital, offset, flexographic, gravure and screen printing technologies. Our department has a spectacular range of equipment that allows our students to get exposure to a wide range of printing and electronic technologies.
I preceded teaching with a career as a consultant to the graphic arts industry, and before that I was the owner-operator of a prepress/design/photography business. I’ve been involved in this for a long, long time, and have accumulated a tremendous amount of knowledge on issues of prepress, typography, color management, file preparation, troubleshooting (perhaps a bit of trouble-making!) and productivity.
I like to look for practical solutions to the sometimes-complex problems we encounter in prepress, and I will work to present solutions to problems that have arisen in the prepress part of our industry.
