VDP hits ELF
June 6, 2007
Okay, I have to tell you this funny story….
The middle child of my three daughters, Emma Louise Farquharson (ELF!), received a notice in the mail from ePoetry.com, informing her that she had won the poetry contest for the poem she submitted last winter. The mailing was a beautiful and effective use of variable data printing. It had Em’s name and gender in various locations and even reprinted the poem (spelling errors and all!!!) to show through the window envelope. I saw it for what it was: as a VDP application AND A SOLICITATION TO BUY SOMETHING. Emma saw it as something entirely different.
When she got it, she flipped! Not only did she believe she actually “won” something, she said to me, “Dad, the president handwrote a note on it saying that he liked my poem especially!” Looking at the piece, I saw that—sure enough—there was a blue ink jet inscription. Emma must have told twenty people that day that her poem was selected from a list of millions. I didn’t have the heart to tell her it wasn’t what she thought it was!
So naturally, we ordered the book and will proudly display it on our coffee table as will the other lucky “winners.” Like PT Barnum once said, “There’s a ‘winner’ born every minute!” God, I love that kid!
As promised, here are my success numbers for the week. You might recall that I have committed to calling at least ten prospects a day and attempting to sell my new time management training program, It’s About Time™
