Tuesday in New York
May 22, 2007
For absolutely no reason whatsoever I am going to add to the list of crazy, stupid stories that take up space on my website (www.printtec.com). My travels over the years have yielded some tales that are truly stranger than fiction. You cannot make this stuff up….
———————————————————————
At first, I was not a fan of New York. As a college kid, I went to the big city and remember stepping outside of my hotel and feeling the energy under my feet. It was as if I could feel the rotation of the Earth. über cool!
I think I have a story every time I am in New York, but I recall a taxi ride to the Javitts Center (not the best part of town, in case you have never been there). It was less than a year after 9/11 and a sadness remained in the air, along with a fair amount of mistrust between people. I could feel tension radiating from the cab I was in from the moment I sat down.
Shrugging off the feeling, we snaked and crawled through the many sets of lights towards our destination. In the background, the cab driver was listening to some odd music. On occasion, a voice would speak. For several minutes, I did not listen, but it was clear that this was some kind of self-help tape, only the message was not, um, helpful:
<> (think, “I Dream of Genie” meets “Snake charming music”) <> <>
Okay, at this point, the tape is suddenly holding my rapt attention.
Then, after a few minutes….
<> (think, “Twilight Zone” meets “Bonanza”)
<>
Yeah, but he is also about to tip you on the service you are providing, too.
I had heard enough. Thinking the next pearl of advice would involve injuring the next white man he sees, I opted out and, at the next corner, threw a twenty through the window and headed out.
I Love New York!
