Funny voice mail
August 30, 2007

I just called a client in upstate New York.  Naturally, I got voice
mail. His outgoing message was, "Hi.  This is Tony Harris.  If I'm
not stressing about the Red Sox, I am probably out on the road.
Leave your name and number."  I have another client in Michigan or
Wisconsin (same thing) whose outgoing VM says, "Hi. This is Barry.
I'm somewhere on the planet.  Leave one."
I am just wondering how much is too much when it comes to levity.
There is an invisible line when it comes to comedy in business and as
someone who crosses it fairly consistently, I am keenly aware of the
impression I leave as a result.  Messing with telemarketers is one thing
(one called yesterday and said, "Do you still use gases there?"
--he thought I was a printer--I replied, "Only when I want to make my
voice sound funny").  That practice is never out of season.  No, I am
talking about the temptation of lightening up a situation.
Any thoughts?
