Kids and Sales Reps
July 16, 2007

Did you ever notice the similarities between parenting and managing sales people? Think about it: There are expectations and assumptions. There are goals and repercussions. Whenever I give a presentation to sales people, I often find myself repeating what I’d said earlier to one of my daughters. This weekend’s talk with my 17 year old was regarding her attitude. It sucked. This morning on a coaching call, I heard something in the rep’s voice that struck a chord. She was bitching about a client and her boss and her coworkers and Production and I found myself talking to Kati all over again. Changing a couple of words, I gave Ginny* and earful. This similarities were striking.

Kati has an excuse for being a pissant. She’s a teen. Ginny doesn’t.

Just a thought.

*Not her real name. Her real name is Kim.
