Learning styles
July 13, 2007

I am fascinated with the way people learn. Having discovered at age 38 (8 years ago) that I had a couple of learning challenges known as ADD and Dyslexia, I have finally come to grips with my own learning style. I would read a page and not have any idea what it said. I would listen to the Sunday morning sermon and find myself drifting off to other thoughts. It has been a struggle to quiet my mind and receive information.

As an educator of sorts, I want to find the best way to communicate. Training sales people is an ironic issue in that I need to get them to slow down and even STOP selling in order to train them how to speed up and START selling. Sometimes I feel as though I am running alongside a moving train, shouting instructions to the conductor who can barely hear me above the din.

I find that people need a training message put several different ways in order to grasp it. Some people like their training seminar-style. They want to be in a conference room with cookies and soda. Others want to read the message. Their choice is for books or articles. Some like it via podcast. That would be the younger generation, I suppose. What’s your learning style?

as someone with ADD all my life.. it does have it’s pluses too. For instance, while I type this to you, I am talking on the phone to my father and listening to Mike and Mike on ESPN on my computer. Multi-tasking is key to my job and ADHD has been seen in most top level CEO’s and type-A personalities. It allows us to switch gears and accomplish way more than others.

Great stuff, Keep it up!
