I found Customer Service!!!
July 9, 2007

So, I have a thing about cruddy Customer Service. My thing is: It always finds me! I am a magnet for bad Customer Service, mostly because I know what the good stuff looks like but partially because I refuse to allow the bad stuff and bend over. I have called a store for assistance FROM WITHIN THE STORE ITSELF (Home Depot sucks).

Yesterday, however, something extraordinary happened. I went to an auto parts store for some new wiper blades. The store was completely devoid of customers and three guys were behind the counter chatting it up. I walked in with a wiper blade in my hand. Gee, what could I have been there for? Suddenly, out of the blue, one of the young men said to me, “Can I help you find the right size wiper blade?”

Waking me up required smelling salts and ice for where I hit my head from the fall, but I came to to find the store manager smiling at me. Not only did he have the right size, he suggested that I look at
the clearance rack since the blade I was looking for was at 50% off.
I bought him out of that size and left $20 lighter and a world happier. This morning when I woke up I thought it was all a dream, but when I got into the car and cleared the windshield of the rain, I realized it was all real.

How tough is it, America, to help a customer. Isn’t that why you are there? In an industry where a printer is a printer is a printer, “Welcome! Can I help you with something?” differentiates. Isn’t that sad?

I’ve grown so accustomed to poor customer service, that I actually go out of my way to report any good customer service I’ve received. It really doesn’t take that much time, because it is so rare.
