Roller Coaster Prospecting
July 4, 2007
So, I am hitting the phones hard these days, trying to drum up sales for my new time management program. It seems like an easy thing to make ten calls a day, but it is not. It is time consuming and frustrating. After a few voice mails (I am running at an 80% VM hit rate), I start to think that nothing will sell and depression sets in. Then, I get someone on the phone or some calls me back (15% of the voice mails I leave result in a call back) and I think, I’M THE KING OF THE WORLD!”
There is, of course, no in between. As difficult as it is, pushing on despite the negativity is crucial. Leaving upbeat voice mail messages helps, too. Selling training is tough, especially since I know how kickass the programs are. Did I tell you about the Calvin and Hobbes comic I saved from years ago (can’t remember and there is no way I am going back to read past blogs and find out!)? Anywho, Calvin has a “lemonade-type” stand set up and the sign above him reads, “A Swift Kick in the Butt $1″ Hobbes, his imaginary tiger, idles by and asks, “How’s business?” “Terrible!” replies Calvin, “and I don’t understand why. Everyone I know needs what I am selling!”
