The Salesman's Workout
March 25, 2008

Set one, done.

Life is full. I am full of, well, today I am full of helpful energy. So, as a service to my friends and readers who are as busy as I, this Blog entry is dedicated towards fitness.

It is hard to squeeze in a work out. Hold on, I will be right back. Okay, set two was a breeze. Like I was saying, staying in some kind of shape while holding down a full time sales job is a pain. Wouldn’t it be easier if they could be combined? This way, a ripped rep could flex pecks while sales rise. Oops, here I go again. That’s three.

So, here’s the deal: Let’s say you want to make some sales calls. First, start on the floor. That’s right, hit it! Face down, let’s see 15 pushups. Next, flip over, tuck your toes under your desk and crank out 25 sit ups. Done? Great. Make a phone call. Regardless of the outcome of that call, once it is over, I want to see another set of 15 and twenty. Then….oh, wait, my turn…back…like I was saying, then make another call and do another set.

Sure, you might look a little silly doing all of these push ups and sit ups but the upside is tremendous. First, you will have kickass abs. Second, your shoulders and upper back will be better defined. In addition, your boss will take notice of your sales activity and it will eliminate the need to make good excuses. Just think, a good “but…” can be replaced with a good butt. Okay, the analogy doesn’t work (neither exercise improves the derrière, but the joke works).

Now isn’t that worth the dry cleaning bill?

By the time you are done, you should have completed six sets. That’s 90 push ups and 150 sit ups. Better still, that’s 6 prospecting calls, a couple of appointments, and more energy than a large latte. Okay, one more set for me (is that five or six?) and I am on to the next task.

As your personal trainer, I recommend this action be taken three times a week. Great job! Good start! Now hit the showers.
