Increasing roll diameter – is it worth it?
November 20, 2008

Question: Currently we are looking at spending $20,000 on modifying an older web to be able to handle 49” rolls rather than just 40” rolls. The question is what the benefits are, is it worth it and what are the considerations?
Answer: Generally the feeling from those who have converted is as follows:
- The benefit is for longer runs. If you have short runs the benefit is small.
- You should see 30% less waste due to less splices and longer runs.
- Fewer web splices add up to lower operating cost.
Points to Ponder:
- Will you need a different clamp truck to handle that size roll?
- Can the floor take the extra weight?
- Does the $20,000 cost include installation and mechanical engineering?
- It is worth putting $20,000 plus in to an old web that more than likely has a market price of $60,000. How long do you plan on keeping this press?
