Can one-year-old ink really cause problems on press?
June 5, 2008

Question: My pressmen are keeping opened sheetfed ink cans by the press for use on future jobs. My ink salesman said all ink older than one year should not be used. Who is right?

Answer: Many printers are "pack rats" who save everything and anything. Saving ink that is older than a year is one of the worst plant practices. Old ink causes so many problems that it would take me two full pages (screens) to list them all!

Only if vacuum-sealed

For a good guideline, do not use any sheetfed ink over one year old unless it is vacuum sealed. For web offset inks, the timeframe is six months. So, your ink rep is steering you right ... be sure to thank him for good advice!

Would you list some of the reasons? We have shelves of partial cans and cups that are old as the hills. It would be a very expensive proposition to dispose of it all.

Like I said, most printers are pack rats—we save everything. Ink that is purchased for the job or mixed for the job should be charged to the job. Thus, the ink on the shelf is fully expensed and is not an expensive proposition. Leftover ink should be used up right away—the Mixmaster program is great for all size shops. Old ink prints bad, dries bad; when stored in cups, it will develop hickeys; and on and on. Look at it another way, Bob: Would you leave $5,000 on your dresser and not earn interest? Then why have $5,000 worth of ink sitting there getting old and bad? Buy a Mixmaster program (www.mixmasters.com) or similar, and use up the ink fast. Enjoy the interest on your money and print better!
