Stinky UV-printed products ...February 21, 2008 Question: Why are we having such a strong, nasty odor coming from our UV-printed products? Answer: It is unusual to have an odor from fully cured UV ink or UV coating. If a full cure is not obtained, this could be your problem. For troubleshooting, I would suggest the following: 1. Have the ink company analyze the odor. 2. Run the paper through the press with no ink or coating. Do you get the same smell? 3. What is the wattage of the lamps? 300 to 400 watt lamps are the usual. I have seen one manufacturer installing 1000 watt lamps with problems. Keep in mind there are several thousand presses with UV drying running every day with no issues. Thus, odor is a rare problem that can be related to any number of issues. Odor is unacceptable. Readers, please e-mail your questions to Ray. In response to: Stinky UV-printed products ... brian windvand commented: Odor could also be the result of the PI packaging your ventor is using. Some PI will give you more odor then other, usually the cheaper PI's have strong odors. If your ink is fully cured, ask your ink vendor about the PI package in your inks.
