Is there a “green” alternative to lamination for book covers?

Question: Our company has heard that there are Green alternatives to lamination for book covers. Have you seen this material? I was told it is made from corn starch and is biodegradable.

Answer: Yes, I have seen one of the alternatives. The gloss was good and the look as well as feel was impressive. I did not check rub but I did check tear – it tears easily. If tear for a book cover is important to you then you need to be careful.

It is called PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) and it is made from corn. There is also a product from Natural Source Printing, Inc. called FiberStone™ that is waterproof and made from natural stone.
