Does stochastic really use less ink?

Question:
Why do the software sellers say that stochastic screening uses less ink?

Answer: Each time the price of ink goes up, many printers start to look at how they can save money on ink. There are several ways. Stochastic screening for a web plant, especially one doing color newspaper inserts, can be a great choice. Savings in excess of 7.9% have been documented for that type of printer.

Not so for sheetfed

Sheetfed printers, however, usually will not benefit from ink savings because they find that with stochastic they can put more ink on the sheet—and they like the visual appeal.

For others, there may be another way because stochastic has some small issues. There are software programs on the market, especially in the newspaper area, that offer benefits such as high-percentage saving as well as coming to balance quicker.
