What’s the standard for water-based coating on a 74 Karat?

Question: I’d like to know the industry standard for overall water-based coating for KBA 74 Karats with anilox rollers—thickness, film weight or is there a way to measure it? We run a dull satin water base, and I feel we’re not laying down enough coating to seal the sheet.

— Jim Tate

Answer: The industry average for water-base coating film wt (usually applied litho/sheetfed) is approximately 1 wet lb. per 1,000 sq.ft. (0.8 – 1.2 wet lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. would be the outer limits). To achieve this, an anilox between 8-10 BCM and 180-220 lpi is best, or any combination in between. It is sometimes difficult to pick the right roller the first time due to the many printing variables. In this case, a banded anilox is recommended for testing to choose the right film weight for your type of work.

The most accurate way to measure coating film weight is the foil test: Foil is taped on to a sheet and run through the press/coater (with no ink). Through a set of mathematical calculations, based on shape/size of foil as well as weight of foil before and after coating, one can determine coating film weight.
