When it comes to press okays, are you a show-and-tell kind of printer—or not?

Question:
Do you recommend a customer coming into a plant to O.K. high-quality color (digital or conventional) jobs. Recently, at an industry meeting, a number of people spoke out against this practice.

Answer: As with all everything else, there are plusses and minuses. This one depends on what kind of a printer are you. If you are looking at long-term growth and seeking a partnership with your customer, then having them in the plant has some great benefits. The positives I see are:

1. A chance to show off the plant.

2. A chance to talk to the customer when you are the only thing on their mind.

3. For them to see how hard your people work on their job.

4. A chance for them to meet your people.

I think press okays are still very important in our industry. I'm on the other side of the fence, as print buyer for the past 20 years, I agree with the things listed as good points. I'd like add another—the chance for little learning. I generally walk away from a press check with a little bit of knowledge, either technique, a reminder of something forgotten, some good samples or some good uninterrupted exchange with my sales person or pressman. Its time well spent.

We have some customers come in for color ok's all of the time for all of their issues. Other times, if they can't make it, they personally know the press crews and feel totally comfortable knowing who will be watching their job for them. They also come away with a better understanding of the whole process (including binding) and have a better idea of realistic expectations.
