Test employees, customers for color vision.

Question: My customers can't see color worth a darn. We are having trouble in the sheetfed area, in the digital press area. In many cases, we are asking our sales people to O.K. color when a customer cannot be in the plant.

Answer: Your issue is not new and, in fact, is common. My first question is have you tested all employees for color blindness and for color acuity? There are test for both items. Your employees should be tested every five years. Keep in mind color vision does change. If your firm is large, you may wish to purchase the tests; if your plant is small, you may find that a local printing association has them available. Recently, a friend of mine tested all his employees and many of his customers. He was delighted that the supervisor of his pressroom had the best color vision of any of his employees and better than any customer. He did find a few people that had issues.

Readers, please e-mail your questions to Ray.
