Where can I get up-to-date information on RIPs?

Question: My organization needs to replace our RIP. It is quite slow and outdated.  Who can I contact for up-to-date info on RIPs and workflows?

Steve Laney, Print Operations Manager
MailSouth, Inc., Helena, AL

Answered by prepress guru and contributing editor Ron Roszkiewicz: RIPs continue to advance as full-featured, workflow-aware, back-end solutions. They include functionality such as step and repeat, imposition, color management with ICC profiles and workflow management. You may or may not want these features and may just be looking for the most productive and easy-to-use VDP (variable data print) solution or even an inexpensive proofing package. Whatever the requirement, RIPs are not hard wired into output devices anymore and there are typically a number of RIP options to choose from for any given device. It really comes down to how you want it to fit into your production workflow and whether it is compatible with your output device(s) or not.

System Upgrade

It sounds like you would like to upgrade your system to take advantage of new functions such as those mentioned above, compatibility with faster processors or support for new output devises.

To get a sense of the state of the playing field today, check out the information at: Adobe, Global Graphics and the comparative checklist at Colorburst. Since Adobe and Global Graphics OEM their RIP technology to other solution developers, check with their partner lists for companies such asEFI and ECRM for their current offerings.
