Chic and Sustainable Print

Green printing can be exquisite and award winning, as demonstrated by Graphic Arts Monthly’s eco-friendly December cover winning a 2008 Tabbie (Trade, Assn. and Business Publications International) Gold Design Award yesterday. The awards featured more than 700 entries from around the globe. The winning cover showcased how vibrant three-dimensional printing could be achieved via eco-friendly methods. It was produced on 65-lb. Mohawk Options 100% postconsumer waste premium cover sheet, used new UV-cured inks supplied Toyo Ink, a combination of varnish techniques and an anilox roller supplied by Heidelberg specifically for the job. Lake County Press printed the job on an 8-color, 40´´ Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 with interdeck UV curing from IST. The project was printed 200-lpi and grain long on 23×35´´ sheets using new Toyo’s expanded-gamut, zero-VOC UV Kaleido Inks. (For more)
''Our goal was to deliver the message that green printing doesn’t have to look like the inside of a cereal box," says GAM editor-in-chief Bill Esler. "We cover the topic of sustainable practices on a regular basis and have printed several covers with different environmental approaches. This cover was our biggest venture – using FSC certified paper and having the recycled logo on the front cover.'
The environmental savings created by producing the 78,000 run cover included:
--preserving 42.5 trees for the future;
--not generating 1,988 lbs. of solid waste;
--preventing 3,933 lbs. of net greenhouse gases; and
--not consuming 30,107,000 BTUs of energy.
“It’s gratifying to be recognized for making something beautiful, but even more gratifying to be recognized for showcasing the options available for sustainable print and design,” says Anne LoCascio, GAM’s senior art director.
