Slim Jim Standards
-- Graphic Arts Online, 4/2/2008 1:31:00 AM
The popularity of “slim jims” as a cost saver for catalogers has prompted the U.S. Postal Service to begin developing new standards for the letter-size catalogs and folded self-mailers. While the size has helped alleviate postal rate increases, “slim jims” frequently jam letter-automation equipment and/or become severely damaged during processing. The USPS is asking printers and mailers to suggest new or alternative construction techniques to improve machine performance on the 1/8´´ and 1/16´´ booklet thicknesses. Mail written comments to the Manager, Mailing Standards, U.S. Postal Service, 475 L'Enfant Plaza SW, Room 3436, Washington, DC 20260-3436.
USPS says any revised standards will not change preparation criteria for enveloped letters. Fully enveloped pieces up to 1/4´´ thick that meet automation standards will continue to be accepted at automation prices.
