New Unwatermarked Grade

Wausau Papers has added a new unwatermarked 70-lb. text grade to its Royal Bond family of papers, which now comprises writing sheets with a genuine watermark in 20- and 24-lb. writing weights, the aforementioned 70-lb. text sheet, and an 80-pound cover. All weights come in white and natural colors, and smooth and light cockle finishes. The Royal Bond line, a 25% cotton grade, also is acid-free with archival quality and 30% post-consumer recycled material.

Photorealistic Digital Printers

Nur Macroprinters has introduced its Salsa Ultima series of wide-format photorealistic printers, which replace the original Nur Salsa models in the company's product line. Offering enhancements in output quality, color matching, productivity, material handling, and reliability, the new models can print at speeds up to 645 square feet per hour, claims the manufacturer. Other enhancements include new Version 3.6 printer control software, which utilizes Nur's PrinTop technology to incorporate an upgraded dot placement algorithm that provides improved image processing and image fidelity in all modes. Say company officials, all Nur Salsa machines can be upgraded to the Salsa Ultima series.

Laser Printers

Xanté Corporation has entered the color printing market with its new ColourLaser series printers, featuring oversized output capabilities up to 13 x 10", performance controller architecture, and PostScript Level 3 compatibility. All three models in the series feature fast Risc processors, 600 x 600-dpi or 1,200 x 1,200-dpi resolution, and Xanté's TrueColour color correction functionality and duplexing capabilities. The ColourLaser 600 includes 64 MB of RAM, standard 10BaseT Ethernet connectivity, and ICC profiles for sRGB and SNAP printing inks. The ColorLaser 1200 includes Pantone Calibration and additional ICC profiles for sRGB, SNAP, SWOP, Euroscale, and Toyo printing inks. The ColourLaser Pro 1200 includes all the features of the above two models plus 10/100BaseT Ethernet connectivity and Xanté's ColourMatch software. An optional duplexing feature is available for the series for pages up to 11 x 17".

Foil-Stamping Press

Therm-O-Type has updated its NSF high-speed foil-stamping press to incorporate new design features aimed at increasing productivity, enhancing safety, and reducing operator workload. For example, the new machine can accommodate sheet sizes from 3 1/2 x 4 1/2" up to 12 x 12 1/4", and features a high-capacity feeder that can accept a 32"-high stack of paper that can be preloaded while the press is running. Other features include a jam detector with interrupt capability, a quick-lock die chase, and registration table with adjustable head stop and side jogger.

Writing Paper Promotion

Mohawk Paper Mills, Inc. has unveiled its new Mohawk Writing Portfolio promotion, showcasing its Navajo Writing and Superfine Writing lines. Says the manufacturer, both watermark-free papers offer digital-to-offset capability along with size and weight versatility. The promotion kit includes Navajo Brilliant White samples in 24-, 28-, and 32-lb. basis weights, and Superfine samples in 28-lb. Ultrawhite, White, and Softwhite selections in smooth and eggshell finishes.

RIP Interfaces

Xitron has released new RIPs for PrePress PantherPlus and PantherPro imagesetters as well as Monotype PantherPro, Ultara, Catara, and Pantara lines of recording devices. The interface is available on Xitron's Navigator NT/2000 RIP, based on the Harlequin ScriptWorks core RIP. Able to drive over 100 recorders, say Xitron officials, the Navigator RIP offers PDF support, error-handling capability, reporting, and optional in-RIP trapping.

Perf/Score/Slit Machine

Graphic Whizard Inc.'s FinishMaster 100 perforation/score/slit machine features a tabletop design that makes the portable unit easy to set up, says the company. Each of the machine's accessory holders is individually adjustable, affording blade change ease and minimal set-up time. Anvil-style perforation provides a flat, burr-free finish capable of being easily fed through any subsequent finishing equipment, claim Graphic Whizard officials. The machine's maximum production rate is 10,000 sheets per hour.

Web Tension Display

Dover Flexo Electronics, Inc. has introduced its MPI MultiPlex Indicator, a multi-point web tension display device for use on multi-station web presses, converting machinery, and winding devices. Two meters on the front panel of the indicator allow up to 32 amplified tension transducer (load cell) inputs to be monitored one or two at a time with the push of a selector button, says the company. Numbers on the readout selector correspond to the transducer-outfitted idler roll positions in the machine's web path.

UV Monitor

IST America has unveiled a new stationary ultraviolet (UV) energy-measuring device designed to continuously measure and control the output of UV energy on presses and converting equipment. The system consists of a sensor and a monitor that gauges and regulates UV energy output relative to press speed. The UV-S3 sensor measures absolute UV radiation intensity as great as 1,500 mW per square centimeter. Says the company, electrical interference is eliminated by screening the sensor as well as digitally transferring data from the sensor to the processing unit. The M2.2 UV monitor can accommodate one or two sensors.

Punched Blades

Max Daetwyler Corporation (MDC) offers custom-punched blades with new blade tips that can be used with any printing application, including label and newspaper presses. Blade tip choices include steel straight edge, lamella tip, bevel tip, coated blade, or double radius edge. All MDC Doctor Blades are manufactured from steel with tight tolerances to deliver the exact-size punched blade made to the customer's specific dimensions, claims the manufacturer.

Sheeter/Slitter System

Contech has announced the availability of its new sheeter/slitter system designed for use with corrugated paper and plastic materials for converting applications or manufacturing products such as boxes, packaging, and sheets. The system comes with an exclusive hydraulic-powered drive system or high-speed brushless servo drive that sheets and slits a range of corrugated paper and plastic material in line or from a roll. Says the company, the system, which provides a finished cut and close-tolerance trimmed product, is available with an optional stacker unit as well as a brake modulation system designed to adjust brake pressure automatically and maintain web tension as rolls decrease in size.

Opaque Paper

Georgia-Pacific Corporation has unveiled its new Titanium Opaque premium #1 opaque paper with enhanced surface smoothness and formation that affords minimal dot gain, says the company. The product, which has a 94 brightness with an icy blue-white shade, is suited for use where opacity is essential to enhance the benefits of duplex printing. Titanium Opaque is available in smooth and vellum finishes, and in 40- to 100-lb. text and 65- to l00-lb. cover weights.

Web Offset Metallic Paper

International Holographic Paper has introduced its Starshine Heatset Web Offset P 530 line of 80-lb. text metallized paper. The papers, engineered to withstand the rigors of heatset offset printing so as to avoid blushing or blistering, are suitable for applications such as high-volume inserts and mailers.

Grand-Format Printing Software

S.H. Pierce & Company's PosterWorks 5.0 offering is a major upgrade to its large-format production application for Macintosh and Windows computers. Say S.H. Pierce & Company officials, the application provides tools for the grand-format printing of displays, fleet graphics, billboards, and custom wraps. PosterWorks can create layouts of up to 500,000 square feet using single or multiple custom-size panels prepared for output on any PostScript device. Version 5.0's new features include nesting tools, print direction controls, and performance enhancements designed to address the needs of large-format printing producers.

Paper Comparison Brochure

International Paper's Commercial Printing Papers division has made available a new brochure comparing its Carolina Coated Two-Side Cover grade with three well-known enamel cover brands. Each sample features four-color process printing plus a gloss aqueous coating. Says the company, all samples were printed in sequence on the same press with the same ink densities and same brands of plates and inks.

Single-Shot Camera Back

Phase One has announced the availability of LightPhase H20, its high-resolution single-shot direct digital imaging system targeted toward high-end advertising studios. The offering can capture large objects and still reproduce fine details, claims the manufacturer, adding that a square-formatted 16-megapixel CCD allows the LightPhase H20 to generate image files that can be offset printed as large posters, even if the image is cropped to a rectangular format. The LightPhase image processing method was invented by Phase One (patent pending) and is designed to be compatible with all major Hasselblad cameras.

THE System, created by graphic arts industry integrated business management solutions developer CRC Information Systems, Inc., contains over 100 modules to handle such tasks as job costing, shop floor data collection, financial accounting, and sales and marketing reporting. The offering's Quick Job Lookup module is a Web-enabled job-tracking program that allows customers to view real-time production status data for all of their jobs. THE System runs on the Microsoft Windows NT/2000 operating system as well as the Microsoft SQL Server 7 database management system.

Digimaster Workflow Software

Heidelberg Digital L.L.C. has unveiled two new ImageSmart software applications designed to enhance the functionality of the Digimaster 9110 Network Imaging System print engine and other high-volume black-and-white printing solutions. The company's ImageSmart Document Mastering 1.5 application builds on the features of its Version 1.0 predecessor to deliver PDF-editing capabilities using industry-standard Adobe Acrobat software. ImageSmart Document Library is a document management system designed to provide a secure storage area for electronic documents.

Digital Cylinder Printer

ImPress Systems has announced the availability of its Cyclone on-demand digital cylinder printer, designed to replace traditional hot stamping, silk screening, and pad-printing processes currently used to print and decorate cylindrical items like pens, flashlights, and cosmetics packaging. Configured as a desktop printer, ImPress Systems says that Cyclone reduces direct and indirect costs by eliminating set-up time as well as the use of dies, screens, inks, and solvents used in traditional printing methods. The system can be used for long, short, and personalized print runs, and applies any computer-generated text and graphics instantly, claims the company.
