The Components of Strategy

-- graphic arts online, 3/1/2001

During Mail-Well's meteoric rise, Gerald F. Mahoney says he encouraged managers to keep in mind the following strategies:

  • Build critical mass through aggressive acquisition.

  • Buy high-quality companies with an excellent management time, customer base, and reputation, and never buy purely for earnings.

  • Diversify the product offering and differentiate the service offering.

  • Improve the efficiency and operations of acquired firms.

  • Leverage size by developing and continuously improving business systems that standardize processes, excise costs, and provide for consistent product and service delivery.

  • Delight customers.
