GPO Named Finalist for International 'Green' Award

-- Graphic Arts Online, 9/16/2008 7:30:00 AM

WASHINGTON, DC, (Press Release)—The U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) has been named a finalist for practicing sustainable environmental stewardship in the information technology area of the agency. This award is sponsored by Computerworld and honors an organization that reduces information technology operational costs by using green technology. GPO upgraded its server to provide faster and improved search results for government publications on the website GPO Access. This modification eliminated over 20 separate servers and resulted in a nearly 50% reduction in energy use. All components of the retired servers were recycled or used for parts.
“It is an honor to be a finalist for this important award and is an example of the commitment GPO has for sustainable environmental stewardship,” said GPO’s Chief Information Officer Michael Wash. “The information technology area of GPO is always looking for ways to make our systems more green and sustainable. The digital information system we are currently developing is another example of the agency wide initiatives of better green practices.”
GPO is developing a world-class information management system for federal government information. When complete, GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys) will give the public a one-stop site to authentic, published government information. This system continues GPO’s commitment to sustainable environmental stewardship and green technology.
Winners of Computerworld’s Green Computing Awards will be announced on September 18th during Computerworld’s Green IT Symposium in National Harbor, Maryland.
The GPO is the Federal Government’s primary centralized resource for gathering, cataloging, producing, providing, authenticating, and preserving published U.S. Government information in all its forms. GPO’s mission is to Keep America Informed. GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three Branches of the Federal Government. In addition to publication sales, GPO makes government information available at no cost to the public through GPO Access (www.gpoaccess.gov), and through partnerships with more than 1,250 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program. www.gpo.gov
