-- Graphic Arts Online, 9/10/2008 6:24:00 AM

California looks to replace its large and aging Sacramento print plant, hoping to build anew on a greener footing. The State Dept. of General Services told the Sacrmento Business Journal  a study is in the works, with results setting a basis for future action expected around October. The state’s standards for buildings require a 20% reduction in energy consumption, and minimal water usage.

The state has been in the printing business for 158 years. The Office of State Publishing

has a mission of trying to "move from the printing-on-paper world to the electronic communication age."  Still, it does plenty of printing, according to its website, producing the state budget, legislative bills, more than 12 million ballot pamphlets, a 14 million tax forms, and 5 million books for the Dept. of Motor Vehicles among many other projects.  The state lists among its equipment a 6-color plus coater, Heidelberg Speedmaster and a Heidelebrg/Harris era M1000 8-unit, four web, 38-inch web running 50,000 impressions per hour.

Separately, a California audit of office supply purchases made by the state from Office Depot discovered $2.5 million in overcharges and unauthorized items purchases--including hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of it virgin fiber copier paper, which isn't allowed in state copy machines.
