Workers of employee-owned Canterbury Press initiated a protest on Friday seeking an explanation as to why they were laid off and the printing company closed. Employees of the Rome, NY-based commercial printer could lose all of their benefits. The workers continue to protest outside of a bank where one if its board members works.
"We're not going to give up on our cause," former employee Phil Thron. "We want our retirement money. We lost our jobs, we lost our retirement. We lost our insurance. We're left without anything."
Canterbury stopped operations on July 14 leaving 46 people without jobs.
In 1975, Canterbury Press became one of the first companies in the country to establish an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) and was a 100% employee-owned company.
