Spectrum Digital Ups Margins 25%

-- Graphic Arts Online, 6/30/2008 10:22:00 AM

Trumbull, CT– Océ, an international leader in digital document management and delivery, announces that Spectrum Digital Services, LLC has strengthened its competitive position and increased margins by 25 percent with the Océ CS650 full color digital printer. Wisconsin-based Spectrum Digital Services is a pioneer in printed, recordable CDs and DVDs, and now the company can print sleeve packaging in-house, resulting in some of the fastest guaranteed turnaround times in the industry. Today Spectrum Digital Services is a one-stop source for marketing and ad agencies, medical facilities, religious groups and many others that need short runs of customized, sleeve-packaged disc media.

“The Océ CS650 helps us consistently meet requirements for color fidelity, accuracy and reliability, while delivering the industry's shortest lead times. I can promise 48-hour turnaround and charge a premium,” said Russ Gnant, President and CEO of Spectrum Digital Services. “Printing that was outsourced is now handled in-house at Spectrum Digital Services, and the monthly savings are significant. The ability to add packaging has grown our margins by 25 percent, increasing our competitiveness because we can do large projects quickly and also handle the very small quantities that many customers need.”

“The Océ CS650 has changed the business model of Spectrum Digital Services in a way that ensures a long-term advantage. The competitive success of Spectrum Digital Services shows how the Océ Job Appropriate Color strategy can add value in many different markets and applications. By helping companies get exactly the level of color quality they need in quantities at an attractive cost, Spectrum Digital Services has increased profitability and established a unique niche that continues to attract customers,” said Brian Dollard, Director of Color Programs, Océ Document Printing Systems.

The 65-ppm Océ CS650 printer can handle a variety of media, including the heavier 280 gm paper needed for stiff CD sleeve packaging. The system prints two- and four-panel CD sleeves, zipper packets for mailings, and high impact communications for trade show handouts, direct mail, multimedia materials and other applications.

Spectrum Digital Services is one of the few companies in the country that does short-run sleeve printing in-house. Before deploying the Océ CS650, they were forced to outsource printing, cutting and folding, which added time and cost. Also, many outside printers wouldn’t handle the 200- to 300-piece orders that make up the bulk of Spectrum Digital Services jobs. Instead customers would have to order far more sleeves than were needed and incur wasted overruns. Now Spectrum Digital Sservices can complete both large and small jobs quickly in-house. A large 10,000-piece job that might have taken up to ten days to produce before can be delivered in as few as two days.

The Océ CS650 extends Spectrum Digital Services capabilities for custom labelling and provides more control to ensure that disc and sleeve printing match. Before, customers would provide components that might not match the other printing in the package. The consistency and accuracy of the Océ CS650 printer have improved the ability to help customers with branding and corporate identity.
