DOD Inkjet Readies for Launch

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG's new Linoprint unit has launched a drop-on-demand inkjet digital printing system, capable of processing variable data for decorating and marking folding boxes, labels and blister packs. The system can be integrated anywhere and in any standard packaging line, and was demonstrated at Interpack in Dusseldorf last month. Though marketed and supported by the new Linoprint unit, it is 100% built by Heidelberg.
The system, in development for three years, is made up of a printing unit and control software. The printing unit includes a print head, cleaning unit and dryer. Linoprint systems incorporate the control technology Heidelberg uses to build its computer-to-plate imagesetters. Field tests are scheduled for Q4.
A single-color system, called 'Linospot,' is close to completion for the blister film printing segment, says the company. Specially optimized screen technology allows any gray tone to be generated; special colors are also possible. Linoprint developers are also working on the Linocolor 4-color printing unit. Specially optimized inks will allow for printing on a wide range of substrates. www.linoprint.de
