Drupa News: Goss Sheetfed Alternative
-- Graphic Arts Online, 3/25/2008 7:30:00 AM
Goss says its Drupa centerpiece will be a web press that presents a reasonable alternative to a sheetfed press. Based on an M600 platform outfitted with a VITS high-speed sheeter, the four-unit "sheetfed alternative" will feature an a web ink train adapted to handle the thicker, pasty sheetfed inks. It has been engineered to minimize marking of the wet ink in delivery, and incorporates a spray powder unit and blanket washing system. In describing the press during a pre-Drupa press briefing, Goss CEO Bob Brown noted the press will have a footprint comparable to an eight-unit perfector, about 56 feet long versus a 54-foot length for a perfector line of comparable capability. The standard inker on the M600 was modified only slightly, says Brown.
"We've done a few things, but nothing significant," he said. "We've been remarkably impressed with the inker's ability" to adapt to the application. "Some roller sizes were changed and some speeds were changed."
No dryer is built into the line. "This will be fairly a traditional sheetfed application," Brown said. Blanket cleaners from several sources have been tested, including Baldwin. "We will take orders for itat Drupa." The press can also be fitted with the Digirail digital metering inking system that is being adapted from Goss's newspaper web presses onto its commercial web lines.
Goss will also exhibit (in Hall 17) its FPS Flexible Printing System, a UnilinerS with automated platechanger and Digirail inker; and Magnum web with level shaftless and Digirail, and the new Sunday 5000 96-page, 112-inch wide web that the comany sees as a gravure alternative. The press has been ordered by Italy's Grafiche Mazzucchelli for delivery in late 2008. Also on display will be the Pacesetter 2500 finisher with inkjet capability and a Magnapak materials handling-gathering system. For more:
