In today's Ticker: Courier Corp., Edison Litho & Printing, Hemlock Printers, Printing Industries of New England, RR Donnelley & Sons, R&E Council and IBM Printing Systems.Book manufacturer Courier Corp., North Chelmsford, MA, acquired book cover printer Moore Langen Printing, Indianapolis, for an undisclosed sum. The deal triples Courierfs cover printing capacity. Moore Langen is a recognized technology leader, particularly for its precise printing of registered holograms.
Edison Litho & Printing, North Bergen, NJ, purchased an 81" 6-color KBA Rapida sheetfed press. The company operates an 80,000-sq.ft plant equipped with more than 12 large sheetfed presses, including two 54x77" and six 43x60" 7-color presses plus inline UV and aqueous coaters. Edison expanded its plant earlier this year and installed a new web press in June. The super large-format press will be installed later this year.
Commercial printer Hemlock Printers, Burnaby, BC won an Ethics in Action award in the Environmental Excellence category (www.ethicsinaction.com). The awards honor businesses and individuals whose commitment to corporate social responsibility has a positive impact on the community. The company is the first printer in the Pacific Northwest to obtain Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody Certification, and the first printer in Canada to sign an Ancient Forest Friendly policy with Markets Initiative.
Bill Esler, editor in chief of Graphic Arts Monthly magazine, will be the guest speaker at Printing Industries of New England's annual awards gala dinner, Nov. 15, Newton, MA. Esler will provide an update on key industry trends. During the event, the association will give its Influencer Award to an individual who has significantly influenced and positively impacted the printing industry.
RR Donnelley& Sons, Chicago, achieved Forest Stewardship Certification for its domestic and Reynosa, Mexico book production facilities, as well as for its short-run commercial printing facility in Manchester, CT.
R&E Council of NAPL (www.napl.org) named Vincent Pinzone, senior VP and GM of commercial printer Sandy Alexander, Clifton, NJ, as its 2005 Pressroom Operations Manager of the Year. The annual award, established in 2002, recognizes excellence in pressroom production management. The award will be presented to Pinzone at the R&E Council's annual Progress in the Pressroom Seminar in Chicago on Nov. 2.
IBM Printing Systems Division will host a best practices forum for 20 leaders in the high-volume mailing industry on Oct. 26-27 at its headquarters in Boulder, CO. Keynote speaker is Jocelyn Renaud, senior partner and account director for advertising agency Ogilvy and Mather. Other expected participants include Exstream Software, GMC Software, Hunkeler, Lasermax Roll Systems, Pitney Bowes and PrintSoft.
