Trade printer 4over Inc. says it plans to build on Dayton’s heritage as a printing mecca, including that of two former printers, the Wright brothers, who went on to make aviation history there. The $80 million, Los Angeles-based 4Over officially opened its second plant in nearby Huber Heights, OH yesterday, holding a ribbon-cutting, attended by over 100 people and featured on local TV news. The facility, funded in part with $7.4 million in industrial development bonds, (e-GAM 11/2/07) has been up and running for about 90 days, as 4Over migrates some work from four California plants to two new Komori Lithrone S40 presses in Ohio, saving customers transportation costs for jobs destined east of the Mississippi. The printer announced that its need for speed has also led to on order for a 16-page Komori System 38S web press, with a KHS-AI (Advanced Interface) system for shorter makeready and minimized paper waste, to be installed in the new plant. Also headed for the 120,000-sq.ft. facility: a Kodak Lotem 800 II Quantum platesetter, Bobst diecutter, Muller Martini Bravo Plus saddlestitcher, Polar pile turner, Stahlfolder TH/KH and a 40” screen press. Other suppliers include Toyo and xpedx.
Earlier this year on the West Coast, 4over made a substantial investment in postpress equipment from Heidelberg, including a Stitchmaster ST 350 saddlestitcher, two Polar 37 cutters, two Polar joggers and two Polar lifts, enabling in-house handling of booklets.
CEO Zarik Megerdichian says the 220-employee 4Over plans to add around 100 people in Ohioto help serve more than 24,000 customers nationwide. Some 95% of its business comes from its Website, where the company uses customer testimonials to promote itself as “super” trade printer.
