FRONTLINE: Fast Plate Changes

By Lisa Cross -- Graphic Arts Online, 11/1/2007

Pressmakers continue their quest to squeeze out unproductive time with the launch of systems and technologies that allow for fast plate changes. In September, KBA introduced the DriveTronic SPC (shown), direct plate cylinder drive technology for simultaneous plate changing on its Rapida 105 press. An electronically controlled high-torque motor drives each printing unit's plate cylinder. The cylinder is freed from conventional drive elements such as gears and clutches.

MAN Roland debuted its DirectDrive plate cylinder earlier this year, part of its QuickChange line to enhance productivity on its Roland 700 presses. Mitsubishi offers a SimulChanger option on its Diamond sheetfed presses.
