KBA North America has been educating customers about UV printing in recent months. In May, KBA teamed up with commercial printer Paragraphics, San Rafael, CA, to host a UV open house. A 41´´ Rapida 105 sheetfed printed several special-effect coating pieces along with uncoated 10-micron stochastic to show UV's color gamut and intensity.
Vendors such as Air Motion Systems, Kodak and Mohawk Papers offered presentations on the technical requirements for making any pressroom UV-capable.
“The seminar provided us the opportunity to see this amazing press up close and ask the press operator all types of questions about the special effect UV jobs they were printing,” said one attendee, Franz Moll, production planner for Santa Cruz, CA-based Community Printers.
KBA also held a fee-based seminar last month at its Williston, VT demo center (shown) on UV-curing inks and coatings. Attendees saw test results on a Rapida 105 press as well as a Genius 52 UV.
Presentations covered a variety of topics: prepress concerns, drying systems, hybrid presses, combination printing rollers, UV/hybrid inks in relation to conventional processes, finishing requirements, UV consumables, special effects and an outlook on the future of UV.
“This continues to be one of the hottest topics in the industry,” says KBA training manager Crystal Flutur. “Printers are constantly asking us for advice to produce special effects for their customers who want to differentiate themselves using UV.” www.kba-usa.com
