Acrobat-FedEx Kinko's link-up draws fire

Adobe's June release of the latest versions of its Acrobat and Reader software, featuring an option that links users directly to FedEx Kinko's Print Online service, has stirred some controversy.
The free Adobe Reader offers a “Send to FedEx Kinko's” option in the file menu as well as a button on the main toolbar showing the Kinko's icon. Acrobat 8.1, which distills PDF files, also features the FedEx Kinko's print option.
FedEx Kinko's launched a Print Online application in January, allowing users to upload files for printing and other services at FedEx Kinko's stores. The partnership integrates that service into Adobe's PDF (Portable Document Format) software.
“By enabling FedEx Kinko's Print Online functionality with Adobe Reader and Acrobat, people can simply and conveniently access FedEx Kinko's printing services, which provides more options for working with PDF files—including professional printing and shipping via FedEx, right from the desktop,” says John Brennan, Adobe senior VP.
Independent print firms see it as favoritism by Adobe toward Kinko's. Joe Truncale, CEO of print trade group NAPL, sent a letter to Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen questioning the inclusion of Kinko's in a preferred role likely to drive business to them. Dave Hilleary, owner of PrintMaster of Columbus (OH), released copies of a letter he addressed to Adobe in which he describes the utility as “aiding the enemy.”
“How do you explain the fairness of that action to all other print production companies that have supported your products in the past?” he asked.
FedEx Kinko's, with 1,600 stores in 11 countries, says Print Online has 133,000 registered users. It plans to open 300 more locations within a year.
FedEx Kinko's Q4 revenues dropped 2% from a decline in copy sales. The unit was the only division to record a sales decline. Quarterly revenues were $532 million, while operating income increased 28% to $23 million. The company also launched direct mail services. www.fedexkinkos.com
