Premium Package

By Lisa Cross -- graphic arts online, 2/1/2007

Diamond Packaging, Rochester, NY, produced the packaging for fragrance maker Coty Inc.'s Forbidden Fruit perfume, inspired by the hit television show Desperate Housewives.

The perfume carton features .018 SBS paperboard complemented by foil stamping and combination stamping (foil embossing) around the artwork on the front panel. The reverse was printed with a dramatic representation of the TV show's stars. The structure also features a glued, inner cell to secure the fragrance bottle. The graphics were printed with four-color offset process inks and two hits of spot red, inline with a dull, stampable UV varnish.

The Coty fragrance deal caps one of Diamond's best years, say company officials. Diamond Packaging added about 20 jobs in 2006, now employing 225, and expects continued growth in 2007.

Diamond recently introduced a new folding carton line that combines plastic and paperboard to provide a three-dimensional view of the product inside. Called Diamondessence, the product also incorporates hot foil stamping, embossing and specialty coating.

Company officials say that increasingly, packaging is the branding. So innovative structures and substrates offer marketers a number of competitive advantages, including perceived value, brand differentiation and shelf prominence.www.diamondpackaging.com/combination
