Compact Glue Binder Debuts

Pantera, Muller Martini's latest adhesive binding line, will see its North American debut at Graph Expo Booth No. 1229, October 15-18 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The Pantera perfect binder runs at up to 4,000 cycles per hour, handling maximum 15×125 5/8´´ books up to 2´´ thick.
In addition to conventional hot-melt binding, it can also process polyurethane reactive (PUR) adhesive. Increasingly popular, PUR offers high pull-resistance and exceptional lay-flat characteristics. Removable glue pots are set in moveable trolleys for easy cleaning and change-overs.
Pantera features a space-saving design, yet can handle a broad array of different sized jobs and can be configured with up to 28 feeder stations. It can also be equipped with a drum cover feeder and an optional crash feeder station for hard-cover book production.
High binding quality is accomplished through backbone preparation, including notching. Glue application uses two rollers and a counter-rotating back spinner. An advanced nipping station provides a sharp and square back of the finished book, says Muller.
Specifically designed for fast set-up via its interactive Set-up Assistant Companion and an intuitively designed touch-screen monitor, the Pantera displays settings and specs for all stations for current production and retains data for repeat jobs, which can be saved and reloaded virtually with the touch of a button. The Set-up Assistant Companion also monitors various elements, such as the glue pot, spinner temperatures and glue level, and provides automatic glue length control for spine and side gluing.
Pantera can be optionally equipped with AMRYS (Automatic Make-Ready System), shortening makereadies and providing JDF compatibility.
The servo-driven system allows binding and gathering to be set up separately for different jobs. At Graph Expo, Muller Martini will run the Pantera with the company's Esprit three-knife trimmer, geared to complement binding systems in the lower performance range. The firm notes that both binder and trimmer are manufactured in Newport News, VA, USA. www.mullermartiniusa.com
