Some industry pundits believe that in 2001, about 20% of all U.S. commercial printers will be using CTP-a figure that RIT's Prof. Frank J. Romano disputes. Although 80% of the U.S.'s approximately 49,000 printers are small businesses, he says, the 1,000 or so large-volume operators in the graphic arts "account for 33% of the whole-dollar volume of the printing industry. You will find that 60% to 70% are gradually phasing out imagesetters for CTP."
