The 22nd Annual GAM 101
Official Ranking of the Industry's Top Printing Firms

It was a year of mega deals among top North American printers. RR Donnelley purchased Moore-Wallace in a $2.8 billion dollar deal, regaining top-dog status in the GAM 101 at annual sales of $8.2 billion. The company dominated the number one spot until 1999, when Quebecor Printing merged with World Color to form what is now the $6.4 billion Quebecor World.
Another big deal was the FedEx acquisition of closely held Kinko's; the move sent a clear message that print is an attractive market. FedEx Kinko's is #4 on the list with revenues of $2 billion.
Meanwhile, St. Louis-based book printer Von Hoffman purchased book component and in-line finishing specialists Lehigh Press. Afterward, the group was acquired by KKR and DLJ Merchant Banking Partners and merged with yearbook publisher Jostens Inc. and cosmetic samples specialists Arcade Marketing. As $1.4 billion Jostens Holding Corp., the group holds the #9 spot. Another big one: Deluxe acquired NEBS, and now ranks #10 at $1.2 billion.
In this 22nd edition of the annual GAM 101 listing of the largest public and privately held printing companies in North America, more firms posted sales gains than losses, reversing last year's trend. Of those firms posting gains, 23% were in the double-digits. Most notably, none of these 101 leading companies project decreased profits next year—not one.
The order of the list is based on revenues. Data was provided by firms in response to a mailed questionnaire, telephone contacts and company Web sites. The companies on the list represent $46 billion revenues—roughly 29% of the print industry's total sales volume. (For Canadian firms, a uniform currency-exchange rate was applied.)
